POEMS BY HILAL KARAHAN IN TURKISH AND ENGLISH

Orta Doğu

1/ Tarihi doğurduğundan beri ayağında sallar
saçındaki bitleri insan kaburgasıyla tarar…

2/ Çöl rüzgârlarıyla savrulur kentlerin etekleri
taş avlulara, camilere, kadim meydanlara
hep birbirinde biten kubbeli sokaklara
aynı közde kavrulur dibek kahve
ve baharat ve barut kokusu

: Kumlar kanı örter de yıkamaz…

3/ Vahşettir, cehalettir çöle yazılmış
yaratanın isimleri: bebeler doğar ve ölür
yazgıdır açlık, kaderdir ishalleri

: Kin dilek tutmaz…

4/ Birbirinin sırtına dayanarak ısınır
çöl gecesinde soğuk, inanç
ve kavim kavli

: Can yarılsa, bedevi keçesi
kan geçirmez…

5/ Deveyle alınır ve satılır, sünnetlidir
hayattan: yüzleri erkeğine dövmeli
yürekleri biçer döver kadınlar…

Middle East

1/ It lulls the history on its feet since it gave birth to it
it combs the lice from its hair with human ribs

2/ The skirts of the cities are scattered by the desert winds
over stone courtyards, mosques, ancient squares,
vaulted streets which always lead to one another

The smell of ground coffee, spice and gunpowder
roasts on same coals

: The sands cover the blood, but cannot wash away…

3/ Names of God written to the desert
are savagery, ignorance: children are born and die
famine is their destiny, diarrhea is their fate

: Grudge does not make a wish…

4/ In the desert night
the cold, the belief and the family consensus
warm up backing up one another

: Even if they are killed, Bedouin felt
does not penetrate blood...

5/ The women are bought and sold
in exchange for camels they are circumcised from the lif:
Their faces are tattooed to men, their hearts are harvester…

Vajinismus Tedavisi

Gerdek gecesi kapı önünde bekleyenler
alamayınca kanlı çarşafı,
aile meclisinde karar verildi:
“Gelin kilitli…”

Kızı götürüp muskacıya bıraktılar,
göbeğinde muska yazsın,
kilidi çözsün diye
üç gün üç gece…

Dördüncü gün sabahı
gelip aldılar kızı,
horozla ödeyerek
muska parasını.

Biçare ömrünce söyleyemedi,
abdestsizin muska yerine,
üç gün üç gece…

Vaginismus Treatment

At the nuptial night,
when the people, waiting behind the door,
could not take the bloody sheet
the consul of family made a decision:
“The bride is locked…”

They took the girl to a sorcerer
to write an amulet on her belly,
to unlock the bride
for three days and night…

In the fourth morning,
they came to take the girl
and pay the money
for the amulet with a cock.

For the rest of her life,
the poor girl could not tell anyone
instead of writing amulet,
what that faithless man did
for three days and nights…
