BOOK REVIEW

TITLE:A NEW DAWN IN AFRICA -Songs of African Child.

PUBLISHER:Crest Royal Ventures.

YEAR:2020

REVIEWER:Michael Mwangi Macharia

This personal collection of poems by the prolific poet Munyal Markus opens on an optimistic note with the verse A New Song. This is about rebirth of the African
continent. It will no longer be associated with want and dependence.

"One day a new dawn

shall descend on the face of Africa,

And she shall sing again ..."

This and other Africa-themed verses show the poet's patriotic fervour and concern for motherland ,a continent that will no longer
dorn the garment of shame".

The poet really appreciates nature. In Singing Bird ,the singsong nature renders the poem suitable for loud reading. In this book there is celebration of everything in
creation from butterflies, ducks, kittens and bulldogs! Simple things like daybreak, nightfall and moonlight are evoked.

There is also the rural scene and aura that has none of the complexities of modern existence. The poet also empathizes with the plight of underprivileged children. This is
apparent in Orphan.

In one famous satirical piece titled The Apathist, the persona mocks the middle class that loves to keep off politics and governance.

"She is a political Apathist,
Perching high on political fence..."

The collection aims at making readers interested in poetry. The beautiful artistic pictures capture attention. There are a variety of poetic structure and styles too.The
sounds and comparisons are memorable-

"The king of the jungle roared
like thunder..."

After every poem there is simple content analysis to help the young readers. The glossary also makes the poems even more accessible.

A New Dawn is suitable for junior and senior students as well as the general reader. It is mouthwatering serving of succulent literary dish and valuable addition to the
reservoir of African Literature
