His poem Identity Card written in 1964 still sparked controversy until today. Alfatihah for Mahmoud Darwish

TO OUR LAND

To our land,
and it is the one near the word of God,
a ceiling of cloud.
To our land,
and it is the one far from the adjectives of nouns,
the map of absence
To our land,
and it is one tiny as a sesame seed,
a heavenly horizon…..and a hidden chasm.
To our land,
and it is the one poor as a grouse’s wings,
holy books…….and an identity wound.
To our land,
and it is the one surrounded with thorn hills,
the ambush of a new past.
To our land, and it is a prize of war,
the freedom to die from longing and burning
and our land, in its bloodied night,
is a jewel that glimmers for the far upon the far
and illuminates what is outside it…..
As for us, inside,
we suffocate more!

UNTUK TANAH AIR KITA

Untuk Tanah Air kita,
dan ianya hampir dengan ayat-ayat Tuhan ,
ada siling awan-gemawannya.
Untuk Tanah Air kita,
dan ia jauh daripada tatabahasa nama
peta ketiadaan.
semakin melemaskan!

IDENTITY CARD (KAD PENGENALAN) – MAHMOUD DARWISH

IDENTITY CARD

Write down!
I am an Arab
And my identity card number is fifty thousand
I have eight children
And the ninth will come after a summer
Will you be angry?

Write down!
I am an Arab
Employed with fellow workers at a quarry
I have eight children
I get them bread
Garments and books from the rocks….
I do not supplicate charity at your doors
Nor do I belittle myself at the footsteps of your chamber
So will you be angry?

Write down!
I am an Arab
I have a name without a title
Patient in a country
Where people are enraged
My roots
Were entrenched before the birth of time
And before the opening of the eras
Before the pines, and the olive trees
And before the grass grew
My father …descends from the family of the plow
Not from a privileged class
And my grandfather ….was a farmer
Neither well-bred, nor well-born
Teaches me the pride of the sun
Before teaching me how to read
And my house is like a watchman’s hut
Made of branches and cane

Are you satisfied with my status?
I have a name without a title!

Write down!
I am an Arab
You have stolen the orchards of my ancestors
And the land which I cultivated
Along with my children
And you left nothing for us
Except for these rocks….
So will the state take them
As it has been said?!

Therefore!
Write down on the top of the first page:
I do not hate people
Nor do I encroach
But if I become hungry
The usurpers’s flesh will be my food
Beware….
Beware…
Of my hunger
And my anger!

KAD PENGENALAN

Tulis!
Aku orang Arab
Dan nombor kad pengenalan ku lima puluh ribu
Aku ada lapan orang anak
Dan yang kesembilan akan lahir lepas musim panas
Kau nak marah?

Tulis!
Aku orang Arab
Bekerja dengan pekerja lain di sebuah kuari
Aku ada lapan orang anak
Aku beri mereka makan roti
Pakaian dan buku-buku daripada batu-batu itu
Aku tak minta belas kasihan di muka pintu mu
Tidak juga merendahkan maruah di tangga bilik mu
Jadi adakah engkau akan marah?

Tulis!
Aku orang Arab
Aku ada nama tanpa gelaran
Sabar di sebuah negara
Di mana rakyatnya cukup marah
Keturunan ku telah terakam sebelum masa termaktub
Dan sebelum terbuka segala era
Sebelum ada pook pine dan zaitun
Dan sebelum rumput tumbuh
Bapa ku…keturunan keluarga petani
Bukan daripada kelas bangsawan
Dan datuk ku….. seorang petani
Juga bukan berpendidikan tinggi, dan bukan keturunan atasan
Dia mengajar ku tentang kemegahan mentari
Sebelum mengajar ku membaca
Dan rumah ku seperti pondok pengawal
Yang dibuat dengan ranting dan akar kayu

Engkau puas hati dengan status ku?
Aku ada nama tanpa gelaran!

Tulis!
Aku orang Arab
Engkau telah merompak kebun nenek moyang ku
Dan bumi tempat ku bercucuk tanam
Bersama-sama dengan anak-anak kami
Dan tiada satu pun yang kau tinggalkan
Melainkan batu-batu…..
Jadi adakah negeri ini akan mengambilnya juga
Seperti yang telah dikatakan?

Oleh itu!
Tulis di sudut atas muka surat pertama:
Aku tak membenci sesiapa
Dan aku juga tak menceroboh
Tapi jika aku kelaparan
Tubuh penceroboh itu akan jadi makanan ku
Hati-hati……
Hati-hati……..
Oleh kelapan ku
Dan kemarahan Ku!
